Story Catcher Festival

About the Story Catcher Festival

The Story Catcher Festival is an annual celebration of storytelling, creativity, and literary exploration sponsored by the Mari Sandoz Society and held at Western Colorado University in Gunnison. Attendees experience an incredible lineup of writers, poets, and thinkers through a series of workshops, readings, and discussions. The festival is designed to help attendees find the stories within and ignite the creativity needed to tell them. Attendees have a chance to meet a community of like-minded creators and storytellers while gaining unique insights from respected writers from around the country leaving them inspired and equipped with practical tools and fresh perspectives for honing their craft.

Honoring a Literary Legacy

The festival celebrates the groundbreaking work of Mari Sandoz (1896–1966). Known for her authentic depictions of pioneer life and Indigenous history, Sandoz’s commitment to truth in storytelling continues to inspire new generations. After 12-years of successful workshops across Nebraska and South Dakota, the Story Catcher Festival has found a home at Western Colorado University to continue her mission of elevating both emerging and established voices.

"The Story Catcher Festival is an incredible opportunity to celebrate the written word and the voices that shape our understanding of the world."
